ClimaPuro System Under Scrutiny for Violating DOE Efficiency Standards

The United States has stringent federal regulations and standards for the HVAC industry. Recently, the Department of Energy (DOE) changed its testing standards for HVAC equipment. All heat pumps sold and installed must comply with these established standards; otherwise, they would be considered illegal. Concerns have been raised about the ClimaPuro System and its performance data. It has been found that the published performance data for Zymbo and its ClimaPuro product line are falsified. The claim raises questions about the product’s efficiency ratings, testing methods, and classification under federal law. Here are the details of the case.

Uses Illegal Rating Metrics

ClimaPuro lists EER for cooling and COP for heating, rather than publishing SEER2 and HSPF2 values. While EER and COP can be considered for technical performance, they aren’t required by law for this product category. The law states that a product must be rated under SEER2 and HSPF2 using AHRI 210/240 testing procedures to be considered a heat pump under this category. It seems this is a willful violation of the law, as the product doesn’t meet DOE requirements.

It Violates DOE Minimum Efficiency Requirements

Zymbo Heat Pump states its cooling capacity of 8,831 BTU in its brochure. The federal law (10 C.F.R. Part 430 and AHRI 210/240) requires heat pumps with a capacity of 8,831 BTU to achieve a minimum SEER2 of 13.4. If it doesn’t, the product can’t be legally sold or installed in the United States. Zymbo heat pumps are missing product documentation confirming whether their pump meets this minimum requirement. Therefore, this unit can’t be considered compliant, as it lacks a published and certified SEER2 rating as required by law.

False Performance Numbers Are Shown

The posted numbers are inconsistent and inaccurate. They have listed a cooling capacity of 8,831 BTU with an input of 750 watts, resulting in an EER of 11.77. However, this is not what they have promoted in the brochure, which shows an EER of 10.6. For heating, there are discrepancies, too, that make the product non-compliant.

Conclusion

The details provided by Zymbo ClimaPuro clearly violate the legally required U.S. HVAC standards. Without a certified SEER2 rating, the use of incorrect efficiency measures, misclassifying products, and inconsistent performance calculations all point to violations of federal standards. This means the product may lead to penalties, equipment removal, and even financial losses. Buyers may face higher energy bills when the heat pump doesn’t perform as claimed. Therefore, the unit is illegal to sell and install in the United States.
