The learning curve required for proficiency with a crossbow is shorter than vertical bows, including compound bows as well as recurve bows and longbows. They are also more forgiving. 

That said, becoming proficient with a crossbow remains a skill, and one that requires dedication and an investment in time. 

Here are some tips to help you shoot more accurately, and if you hunt, to be more successful generally in the field. 

Get Closer 

It is important to remember that while crossbows shoot faster and may shoot flatter than compounds and recurves, they are still fundamentally bows and not firearms. 

In other words, game animals like deer can still jump the string if you give them too much range to respond. 

The solution is to close the gap. While there are some hunters that might still take a shot at 40 or 50 yards or even further, ethically and responsibly, you should keep shots to within 20 yards, or just a little more than that. 

Adjust Bolt Weight 

There are two schools of thinking here. Lighter bolts shoot flatter and faster. Heavier bolts are quieter and deliver more energy. Both can be beneficial. 

Lighter, flatter shooting bolts can be better if your goal is to shoot more accurately with less bolt drop at slightly longer ranges. 

By contrast, heavier bolts are quieter and deliver more knockdown power and penetration, which can be a huge benefit when hunting.

The one note here is never to shoot a bolt that is too light for your bow, which should be indicated in your owner’s manual. Shooting a bolt that is too light can simulate dry fire conditions and will cause irreversible damage to your bow.

Shoot from a Consistent Stance 

Whether you shoot sitting, kneeling, standing, or from a bench, try to keep that consistent whenever you are training, and to the degree to which it can be translated to competition or hunting, keep it consistent there as well. 

Adopt a Consistent Mount 

The same goes for how you mount the crossbow. While you won’t have a true anchor point as you would with a compound bow or a recurve, a consistent mount with a crossbow will translate to better accuracy if you hold all else equal. 

Don’t Jerk the Trigger 

Just like firing a rifle, jerking the trigger, or making other aggressive movement while shooting or immediately prior to it will cost you accuracy.

First, get familiar with when the trigger will break and coach yourself on that. Then train to eliminate jerky movements. You want to apply consistent pressure with the pad of your fingertip, directly to the rear, until the trigger breaks.

Lubricate, Silence and Dampen Your Crossbow

Lubricating, silencing, and dampening a crossbow will make it quieter, and depending on which of them you perform, may make it faster as well.

Crossbow rail lube is cheap, readily available and can be applied in seconds. It will make the bow shoot more quietly, will add FPS off the rail, and will help protect your string from damage. 

Silencers and dampeners will both make your bow quieter, which can produce an advantage in the field. Silencers can cost you a few FPS, but if you also lube the rail you can help cancel this out.
