Shooting 1” groups at 100 yards is one thing. Connecting with a target (at all) at 1000 yards, or a mile; now that is quite another.

The point here is that true extreme long-range shooting is a whole other ball game. You need equipment that can support you, and you need to train appropriately to be successful. Here’s your primer.

What You Need

What range gear you bring with you is a matter of personal preference. However, you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re equipped with the following.

• Invest in a quality rifle. Extremely long-range rifle shooting is demanding and your rifle must deliver. Look into models like the Armalite AR-50, McMillan TAC-50, Cadex CDX-50, or a CheyTac M200 for sale. Rifles like these are appropriately chambered, adjustable, expandable with attachments, stable, and most importantly, guaranteed by the manufacturer to uphold a high standard of accuracy. • Outfit it with a good scope. Your optic, like your rifle, is not one area in which you want to pinch pennies. Get a scope that has a BDC, or bullet-drop compensation reticle, that will enable you to shoot more confidently at ranges beyond where your rifle is zeroed.
  
  
• Get a spotting scope: We can be more flexible with a spotting scope. You don’t need the highest end model you can afford, you just need to see where your shots landed on the target.
  
  
• Find a place to shoot. Lastly, and this will be obvious, you will need to find a range that’s capable of supporting your new long-range shooting hobby.

Tips for Success

In addition to preparing with suitable equipment, you’ll also want to practice, and make sure you put the time in, to become a better long-range shooter. Here are some general, high-level tips.

• Practice dry-fire training. Dry fire training, typically done with snap caps, can help you break the bad habit of flinching, or identifying how and where you are putting pressure on the rifle before the trigger breaks. Breaking this bad habit is critical at all ranges but absolutely vital at long ranges. A small flinch at close range might make your shots wander just a bit off the bullseye. A flinch at 1000 yards can result in a clean miss.
  
  
• Practice breath control. How and when you take and hold your breath, and at what point of your natural breathing cycle you fire, can impact accuracy. There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to do this (some hold their breath, some shoot at the bottom of the cycle right after an exhalation, etc.) but be consistent in your training.
  
  
• Spend more time at the range. Lastly, no one ever gets better at anything they don’t do often. Make it a point to get to the range and actually practice.
