Funcom announced in a developer blog — and Eurogamer picked up the news — that patch 1.3.20.0 turns off PvP in all Hagga Basin zones and adds dedicated PvE Deep Desert instances.

The change follows months of player feedback; shortly after launch many complained that the endgame’s iconic Deep Desert was being overrun by airborne gank teams, making peaceful exploration and spice runs risky.

Funcom said the decision was driven by data and surveys: more than 80% of lifetime players stick to PvE content, so blending PvP and PvE in the same spaces conflicted with the studio’s goals.

Rather than remove PvP entirely, the studio opted to separate modes: pure PvE servers let players focus on survival and discovery without other players attacking them, while PvP Deep Desert instances remain for those who prefer conflict.

To keep PvP attractive for that minority, players in PvP Deep Desert instances will receive a 2.5× boost to spice harvesting and mining yields, giving higher-risk runs higher rewards.

“PvP should be optional and rewarded, not required for progression,” Funcom explained, describing the update as a “PvE-first” shift that still preserves competitive play for those who want it.

The split aims to let explorers and lore-seekers enjoy the desert’s content safely, while providing a dedicated arena with meaningful incentives for hunters and raiders.

Funcom will soon enable player-hosted servers for Dune: Awakening,

providing extensive customization options for the community.

These private servers will allow adjustments to resource gathering speeds,

construction restrictions, and item degradation settings.

Crucially, hosts will also have control over PvP regulations,

enabling tailored gameplay experiences.

The developers emphasized ongoing work on future updates,

with plans to enhance these customization features over time.
